What is Life

What is Life With the dawning of the holy season of Lent, it is normal and natural to take off on a journey of self-introspection to examine the direction our lives are heading. It is also to be noted that these periods of self-analysis are specially true during moments of silence and solitude. In this regard, Walter de la Mare's famous lines come to my mind: "What is this life if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare". If we were to sum up the main purpose of our lives, Jesus'…See More

Christmas Equals Christ

As Christmas is just around the corner, it is to be lamented that a growing spirit of worldliness, commercialism and self-centredness has over-shadowed the true spirit of Christmas. Christ, the raison-de-etre of Christmas has been pushed into the background while we have allowed everything else except Him to take His place in our hearts. Note the malls and shopping complexes decorated from top to bottom with streamers, lights and ballons. Watch the unending shopping sprees undertaken from dawn…See More

IIs Heaven or Hell Hotter

Is Heaven or Hell Hotter?November 2nd is dedicated to the commemoration of All Souls, and in fact, the entire month of November is dedicated to the remembrance of all the faithful departed, especially our near and dear ones, that we pray for them to enjoy eternal bliss in the kingdom of Heaven. During this time, it is normal to reflect upon our own deaths and what is to happen after we die. A concept which still seems to baffle us and is not very clear in our minds is that of Purgatory and…See More

Sufferings = Glory

Sufferings = Glory A most delightful movie reminding me of the two Greek classics, Illiad andOdyssey written by Homer, the blind story teller which I had studied in schoolwas "Troy". A line from that movie that kept coming back to my mind again andagain was what Phytia, the mother of Achilles said to him before he departed forthe shores of Troy "Your glory walks hand in hand with your doom". If I were tochange this sentence to a Christian context it would read "Your glory walks handin hand with…See More

The One in Me

Everyone loves to see men and women of achievement, especially those who are self-made through the efforts they have made in various fields, leaving their mark on society and their memory in our minds. We all like to be associated with men and women of talent, achievement and strive to draw inspiration from their lives. However, for us as Christians, followers of Jesus Christ, we need to seriously ask ourselves if there is really anything such as "self-made" persons. We know that as long as we…See More

What a Friend

Posted on February 25, 2011 at 1:23am 0 Comments

One of the greatest relationships we form, cherish and nourish, apart from familial relations, are those of friendship. We celebrate Friendship Day along with other days like Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day, etc. Does the celebrations of these days mean anything? Do they help us strengthen our relationships with one another as they are primarily meant to do?

There is no person who can survive without a friend. Often there are…

Increase our Faith

We often hear this word 'faith' and are always asked to have faith, especially in God but also in our friends and those we love. What is faith? The Oxford English Dictionary defines `faith' as complete trust or confidence, and strong belief in a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather…

Season of Giving

By Patrick John Ashing

Oblate, OSB Cam

With the four weeks of Advent leading us to the solemnity of Christmas, a feeling of expectation dawns in our hearts. Christmas is the season of giving. What will my husband/wife give me for Christmas? What can I expect from my brothers/sisters at this time? Is it likely that I will be surprised by something I had longed for from some of my friends? While all this is human and normal, it is high time to look at… Continue

Hello Patrick,

So so sorry for taking so long to reply! ( I missed your comment) I will add you to the daily intentions.(my poor prayers to Jesus for you) Those in need of the Lord, the Gospel, all the sacraments I hold dearly to my heart in prayer. I have been close to much suffering all of my life( I am sure we all have seen the need for a warm heart as we suffered the same) what love and warmth in this apostolate..(for the one who recieves and just the same for those who give) - such love is truly the Gospel in action. I pray for your perseverance and passion to increase. I think of the smile from those in need as Jesus uses you to be that instrument...that moment. What joy! This is a "taste of heaven". It suddenly calls to mind Holy Communion.Instances and subtle touches from the Hand of the Infinite Love of God. Yes I will pray for you (for what a poor servant's prayers are worth) We serve together. In His Passion..in Communion.

peace to you brother,

-bradley
